Gina Torres was born on April 25, 1969 in New York City, NY (Manhattan to be exact), the youngest of three children in a Cuban-American family.  Her family lived briefly in Washington Heights, but later moved to The Bronx.  Her parents were both natives of Cuba and her father worked as a typesetter for "La Prensa" and "The Daily News".  Gina began singing at an early age, immersed in the Latin culture of her parents and her neighborhood.  She attended high school at the High School of Music and Art.  She applied to several colleges, and was accepted at all of them, but could not afford to attend.  Gina decided then that perhaps college wasn't what she needed, and she chose to pursue her dream of being a performer.

After high school, she got a job interning at the Lincoln Center Theater Company, where she got a chance audition to replace a cast member in "Anything Goes".  She did not get the part but she did get an agent because of it.  Her first professional gig was performing in a dinner theatre production of "Dreamgirls" in Bridgeport, Connecticut.  After that enagement, Gina was cast in the theatre company "Theatre for New Audiences" and performed in the plays "Raisin in the Sun" and "Antigone".

More stage work followed, but at this point Gina began auditioning for TV and landed a bit part on the soap opera "One Life To Live".  She was brought back several times over the years, in different roles, because they liked her so much.  Her next break was as a cast member on the TV pilot, "M.A.N.T.I.S." co-starring Carl Lumley.  The initial pilot was a hit, but when Fox scrambled to turn it into a series, they got rid of most of the original cast, including Gina.  The revamped "M.A.N.T.I.S." only lasted one season before being cancelled.

Gina continued to work in small roles on both television and in films, but her biggest break yet was about to come when she was cast as Nebula, the Pirate Queen, on the hit syndicated series "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys".  She recurred in the role for several episodes, and also appeared on the Hercules spin-off "Xena: Warrior Princess" as Cleopatra.  The producers of Hercules & Xena obviously saw Gina's great potential and cast her as one of the leads in their next syndicated series, "Cleopatra 2525".  Though the show was cancelled after one season, it remains a cult hit and has developed a large fanbase over the years since it aired.

Following this, she made several guest appearances as Sydney's nemesis Anna Espinosa on the ABC series "Alias", and though she's only done a handful of episodes, her character is a favorite of the fans, and probably the only character who can match Sydney in strength and wits.  She was next cast by TV-mastermind Joss Whedon in his sci-fi/western "Firefly".  Though beloved by it's fans, "Firefly" was sadly cancelled after only 11 episodes aired.  After the cancellation of "Firefly", Joss cast Gina on one of his other shows, "Angel", as Jasmine, the 4th season's "big bad".  In 2003, Gina also had a role in the final 2 Matrix movies, "The Matrix Reloaded" and "The Matrix Revolutions".

In 2004, Gina appeared in the comedy "Hair Show" and the independent film "Fair Game".  And in 2005, she reprised her role as Zoe in "Serenity", the big-screen spin-off of the series "Firefly".  With several movie roles in the works, and another guest appearance on "Alias", 2006 is shaping up to be another great year in the career of this dynamic and multi-talented actress.

In September of 2002, Gina married Academy Award nominated actor Laurence Fishburne.
